Each semester, Utah Valley University’s School of the Arts creates a schedule of events to entertain, educate, and delight students and this semester is no different.
Highlights from the Theatre, Music, and Dance programs for Spring 2016 include:
Jan. 14–30, Mother Hicks, Noorda Regional Theatre, presented by the Theatre department. Told through sign language and poetry, this evocative story is about a young deaf man, an orphan girl known as Girl, and a mysterious older woman, Mother Hicks, who is suspected of being a witch. The play recounts the difficult journeys of all three as they discover who they really are in troubled times.
Jan. 20–22, Elevate, Sorensen Center Ragan Theater, presented by the Synergy Dance Company. Choreographed by guest artists, faculty, and students, the evening promises to be exhilarating, innovative, and entertaining.
Feb. 2, Spring Choral Showcase, St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral (Orem), presented by the combined choirs of UVU. With music spanning several centuries and inspirations from worship traditions, the choirs invite all to rejoice the arrival of spring with them.
Feb. 13, Valentine’s Day at the Rainbow Room, Sorensen Center Centre Stage, presented by the UVU Jazz Ensembles. Beginning with a delicious dinner, the night proves to be a romantic experience through song and dance full of Big Band swing. With special appearances by members of the UVU Ballroom Dance Company, this will be an event to remember.
March 3–12, The Rez Sisters, Noorda Regional Theatre, presented by the UVU Theatre department. This award-winning play is a powerful and moving portrayal of seven women from a Native-American reserve, attempting to beat the odds by winning at bingo. And not just any bingo – but THE BIGGEST BINGO IN THE WORLD – with a chance to win their way out of a very tortured life.
April 6-7, Lovers, Losers, and Libertines, Sorensen Center Ragan Theater presented by the UVU Opera. Full of opera, operetta, and musical favorites as told by lovers, losers, and libertines, this performance will share the love of opera with all who attend.
April 7–23, 9 to 5 The Musical, Noorda Regional Theatre, presented by the UVU Drama department. Based on the hit 1980 movie, the musical follows three female co-workers as they devise a plan to get even with their bigot of a boss. As their plan unfolds, they give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that’s kept them down. This is a show you don’t want to miss.
April 14-16, Capstone Senior Showcase, Sorensen Center Ragan Theater presented by the UVU Department of Dance. Graduating senior dance majors present their collaborative finale concert. Styles vary to inspire any dance lover as the group of graduates delights and inspires all in attendance.
April 21, A Romantic Encounter, Sorensen Center Grande Ballroom, presented by the UVU Symphony Orchestra. To conclude the season, the Symphony smashes the rules of the Classical era as they play the wonderful music of the Romantic composers.
April 21-23, Magic of Motown & Dance, Sorensen Center Ragan Theater, presented by the UVU Ballroom Dance Company. To wrap the semester, take a step back in time as the Ballroom Dance Company teams boogie down memory lane to Motown’s greatest songs.
