On Thursday night in the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago the lady Wolverines took the loss with a final score of 60-55 after facing off against Chicago State. The shining star of the game being Paris Williams as she lead her team to victory with a total of 28 points scored for the game.

Williams started the game of strong and set the tone for the night by spear heading the Cougars early lead with 11 points of her own in the first eight minutes of game play. With 8:05 left to play in the first, Chicago pulled their lead to as high as 21-12 where UVU was finally able to slow them down. From there the Wolverines suffered from a scoring freeze that lasted over five minutes. It took a lot of effort from Sam Loggins, sinking a couple of layups, and Rhaiah Spooner-Knight, nailing a jumper, to put an end to UVU’s drought, 21-18.

It was slow work for Utah Valley to chip away at Chicago’s lead. Freshman Mariah Seals brought back some pep to the Wolverines by shooting 4-for-11 from the three point line and adding 14 points for the game. Seals array ended with two minutes remain in the half. Loggins picked up where Seals left off and laid it in with 30 seconds remaining to give UVU a 27-26 lead at the break.

The last of the game was a frenzy as Chicago State regained control with six minutes left, 47-46, with a three pointer from Konner Harris and Utah Valley battled back hard. However another consecutive trey from Harris extended the Cougar’s lead 50-46 and that seemed to be the tipping point. Even with Loggins tallying a jumper and a layup, 54-52, CSU countered with six more. In a last ditch effort UVU’s Rebecca MaWhinney put up a buzzer beating three and closed the game at 60-55.

The lady Wolverines continue their road play at UMKC on Saturday, January 31st. The match starts at 1:00p.m. MT.
