After a scoreless tie through 68 minutes, Seattle University’s women’s soccer team picked up goals from Lauren Munechika and Maddy Cartwright to help them to a 2-0 win over Utah Valley University in a non-conference match Aug. 28 at the University of Idaho.

Munechika began the scoring for the Redhawks (3-1) when a Jamie Coe pass deflected through the Wolverine defense to a streaking Munechika who poked it into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Cartwright clinched the game when she beat Utah Valley keeper Hailey Brown to the ball and kicked the second goal from 10 yards out. Kara Kuttler assisted on the play.

UVU made some pushes to even the score, but three shots from Lauren Bluth could not bring the Wolverines even.

“It’s obviously not a result we’re happy with, but the girls fought hard and did some good things. We just made a couple of costly mistakes,” commented UVU head coach Brent Anderson.

Utah Valley continued their non-conference schedule the next day, dropping a 3-1 match to the University of Idaho.

Ashley Perez and Chelsea Small each got the Vandals on the board quickly with goals in the 14th and 19th minutes of the first half, respectively, off Jennifer Hull assists on each.

Sari Morrison converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute to seal the deal for Idaho.

UVU defender Brianne Larsen converted on a Camille Broderick pass for UVU’s first goal in an away game this year in the 87th minute, but it was too little too late.

Idaho (1-2) picks up their first win, while the Wolverines have dropped three straight since a 5-1 exhibition win Aug. 17 over Weber State.

The Wolverines will look to rebound Sept. 4 when they host Wyoming in their home opener.
