Riding on the emotional wave of senior night and the confidence of a superior home record, the Wolverines finished off the Houston Baptist Huskies in a three-set sweep. The lone senior for the Wolverines, Kristi Lindley did her part in securing the victory with a .302 attack percentage on the night.
“I think there is a lot of pressure on senior night to perform well and send our seniors out on a good note,” said coach Sam Atoa. “Our girls did a nice job of protecting our home court tonight, which is what they’ve done all season.”
Lindley, a senior from Idaho Falls, is second all-time in assists at UVU and holds the record for assists in a single game since the Wolverines began NCAA competition. Lindley will finish her career at UVU after being named to the Division I All-Independent First Team after leading all Independent players with a single-season record 12.67 assists a game.
In the first set in the sweep over Houston Baptist, the Wolverines dominated with a 25-17 win. With several players making an impact, the Wolverines recorded 19 digs with Allyce Wilson leading the way. On the night, sophomore Kayli Broadbent led all attackers with 14 kills for a .314 attack percentage. The future of the program appears bright as freshmen Jaicee Kuresa and Faith Tusieseina contributed with nine kills each.
The second set saw the Wolverines cruise to another convincing win, 25-19, in which Broadbent recorded six kills. Defensively, Wilson led the team with 10 digs, pacing the Wolverine effort in holding the Huskies to 19 points.
The third and final set saw the Huskies bite back, but falling short 26-24. Lindley had her moment as she began the set with a service ace. The Wolverines now move into the Independent Championship, which will be held on campus Nov. 21-22.
