San Diego, California — The San Diego State Aztecs score early and often to defeat Utah Valley University 6-0 in the season opener for both teams on Friday night in San Diego.

Aliyah Utush scored two minutes into the game to give the defending Mountain West Conference Champions a 1-0 lead.  She punched in her second goal in the 23rd minute to make it 2-0.  Zsuria Phare scored in the 35th minute to make it 3-0 before halftime.

SDSU threatened to make it a four-goal lead before the half but UVU goalkeeper Jessica Duffin stopped a penalty kick attempt by Gemma Craine to keep it at 3-0.

In the second half, the Aztecs kept the heat on as Hedda Regefalk scored four minutes into the half and six minutes later Angela Mitchell put one in the back of the net after spinning away from the UVU defender to make it 5-0.  Leah Pruitt put the finishing touches on the scoring for SDSU when she scored on a set piece to put the final tally at 6-0.

The Aztecs outshot the Wolverines 25-4 in the game and had nine corner kicks to UVU’s three.  Duffin made five saves on the night for UVU but it wasn’t enough.

UVU looks to bounce back on Sunday morning when they host Central Arkansas at Clyde Field in Orem at 11 a.m. MT.
