Pedroia wins AL MVP award
Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was announced as the American League MVP last week. He became the first AL second baseman to win the award since Nellie Fox won it in 1959 with the Chicago White Sox. On the year Pedroia batted .326 with 17 home runs and 83 RBIs. Pedroia led the Red Sox to the ALCS where they fell to the Tampa Bay Rays.
MLB manager makes history
The Seattle Mariners hired Don Wakamatsu as its new manager making him the first Asian-American manager in MLB history. Wakamatsu is the 14th manager in Mariners history. Last season he was a bench coach for the Oakland Athletics and before that he spent five years with the Texas Rangers. He will have his work cut out for him, the Mariners lost 101 games last season.
Pujols wins second NL MVP
Albert Pujols won his second NL MVP award despite the Cardinals finishing in fourth place. This is lowest spot for an NL MVP winner in 21 years. Pujols hit .357 with 37 home runs and 116 RBIs. To win the award Pujols beat out Ryan Howard of the Phillies, Manny Ramirez of the Dodgers and Ryan Braun of the Brewers.
