The Utah Valley University volleyball team showcased their talents in front of a lively Wolverine crowd on Tuesday evening in the PE Building where the green team defeated the black team in a three set sweep (25-16, 25-23, 25-23).
Sophomore outside hitter Lexi Thompson recorded a match-high 14 kills for the black team while junior outside hitter Kiahna Steiner led the girls in green with 12. Sophomore setter Sierra Starley had a match-high 33 assists and junior setter Kelcee Munk finished with 32 of her own. Senior middle blocker and two time WAC preseason player of the year Lauren Bakker played limited minutes, but finished with nine kills, three blocks, and a .444 attack percentage. Redshirt senior Jaramey Barney led the way defensively with five blocks. Freshmen Brooklynn Bodily and Sabrina Tanner each contributed with 12 digs on the evening.
“It’s always fun to play in front of people, they’ve been beating up on each other for two weeks so it was a fun night tonight,” said head coach Sam Atoa. “There’s a lot of things that we still need to work on, but there were some very good things that we saw tonight.”
UVU will begin their regular season on Friday against UC Santa Barbara in Malibu, California at the Pepperdine Asics Classic which will begin an 11-match road trip. The Wolverines will play their home opener against No. 11 Brigham Young University on Sept. 19 in the PE building at 7 p.m.
