UVU’s Chelsea Baker and Allah Laryea-Akrong honored by conference

Utah Valley’s Chelsea Baker and Allah Laryea-Akrong have been selected Great West Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 4, the league office announced Wednesday.

Baker, a junior from South Jordan, Utah, won the 400 meters at the BYU Cougar Invitational. The defending Great West Conference 400 meter champion posted a time of 56.32, setting a new school record. Baker also led UVU in the 200, as she placed second overall with a time of 24.91.

Laryea-Akrong led the UVU men at the same event, winning both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. The freshman from Ghana won the 100 with a solid time of 10.57 and broke the school record in the 200 by winning the event with an impressive time of 20.97.

Brinkerhoff named Great West player of the week

Utah Valley senior Jace Brinkerhoff was named the Great West Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. Brinkerhoff batted .654 (12-for-21) last week in leading the Wolverines to a 3-2 week.

He also hit three home runs, three doubles and drove in 13 runs during the week and became UVU’s all-time leader in runs batted in with his three RBI performance in the Wolverines’ 23-9 win over Southern Utah on Saturday.

Brinkerhoff is batting .420 on a team that ranks tenth in batting average (.351), twelfth in runs per game (9.1) and ranks second in the country in doubles per game (3.32).
