What was cutting edge in technology a year ago is slow today. Two years is old and five years is obsolete.
With most businesses in the world becoming more tech savvy, it is more and more important to know how to work with technology. This is the idea behind Women In Technology.
WIT is an organization designed for any women that need help in this department. Established in 2009,there are currently 17 members.
Through joining WIT, students are able to network and gain resources that are made available for women. Kim Chiu and Jacelle Erickson are currently the advisors over this organization.
“My success is your success,” WIT President, Keenya Barnes-Heyward said. “The support and encouragement received through this club enables myself, and others to successfully engage in the higher learning experience. I attribute my accomplishments to WIT. I attended a CTE presentation at Turning Point program and it changed my life.”
WIT supports, facilitates and advocates for women on campus. WIT’s membership is open to anyone, a technology major is not required, and a member does not have to be a UVU student. Students also don’t have to be women to be a part of this organization.
Russann Tomlinson is currently the vice president. There are no other officers right now, but the club does have positions available. Anyone interested in applying for an officer position is encouraged to do so as and become an integral part of this organization.
The Career and Technical Education department sponsors all of WIT’s technology programs. CTE offers one and two-year programs that matriculate into four-year degrees, including: Accounting, Automotive Technology, Aviation Science and Nursing.
WIT encourages non-traditional and traditional students to join. A WIT social was held on February 10, where a presentation was given and gave students an opportunity to meet others as well as network with those in technological industries.
The WIT encourages women that have gone on to become professionals in any of the fields to come back and help out anyone entering the field.
The WIT will host a financial aid workshop which will be held on May 13, 2010.
