The Institute of Religion in Orem will present an emeritus general authority of the LDS church to speak to students, as part of the weekly Friday devotionals series.

Merrill J. Bateman is an former member of the Quorum of the Seventy, and will be speaking on Friday, Feb. 4 at noon at the Orem Institute of Religion in the chapel.

He and his wife, Marilyn Scholes, are the parents of seven children.

Bateman has served as a member of the First and Second quorum of Seventy, along with serving in the presidency of the Seventy, as the Presiding Bishop of the church and as the president of Brigham Young University.

After his release as a general authority in 2007 he was called as the president of the Provo temple and served in that calling until last year.

Following Bateman, there will be a “munch and mingle” in the Institute gym.
