Latino high school students from the Wasatch area have the opportunity to attend concurrent enrollment courses in hospitality offered by the Wasatch Campus Hospitality Leaders of Tomorrow to help stimulate the economy of Park City.
The program is designed to help eligible students gain vocational training in the field of hospitality and earn six college credits over the five-week course.
Taking into account the popularity of the Sundance Film Festival and the vast number of ski resorts in Park City, those in charge of the program hope that supplementing the hospitality industry in the area can help improve the economic climate of the community.
Considering the immediate demand for hospitality personnel along with an expected increase in tourism in Park City, UVU has found that through establishing this program they can both meet the needs of the community and give minority students an insight into the opportunities available in the hospitality industry while earning college credits.
The concurrent enrollment courses were the idea of Wes Bitters of the UVU Wasatch Campus Summer Institute and Yudi Lewis, director of the Latino Initiative, in conjunction with the Woodbury School of Business Hospitality Program.
Students enrolled in the courses will be able to travel to some of Park City’s most visited resorts such as; Robert Redford’s Sundance Resort, Zermatt Resort, Homestead Resort, Stein Eriksen Lodge and the Deer Valley Resort, in order to observe firsthand what exactly the hospitality career entails.
The courses are available at the UVU Wasatch campus to the students of North Summit High, South Summit High, Park City High and Wasatch High.
