A college education can get a person ahead in life, but internships are what give a person experience. UVU Internship Services is available to students to help them find internships that will give them experience in their desired field. Many opportunities are available where students can have once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

“It’s a great experience for students to learn about a career to see if that’s what they really want to do. It also gives students a chance to network and meet people in their field,” said Marsha Haynes, director of internship services. “Internships are good for the employers also because they find excellent employees. The reports we get back from employers indicate they are very pleased with our UVU students.”

This past summer, there were five UVU students that were working in government internships in Washington, D.C. This includes Nathan Gambill, who graduated from UVU in 2008 with honors in political science and interned for Utah Sen. Robert Bennett’s office doing legislative research.

Rod King, an accounting major, was an auditing intern at the Department of Defense Office of the Inspector General, in which capacity he traveled to Colorado, Delaware and New Jersey for field research. King also spent time working in the Pentagon and was offered a job upon graduation.

Karilyn Henshaw, who graduated from UVU in 2007 in accounting, had applied for an internship in Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch’s office, and was invited afterwards to apply for an open staff position in his Washington, D.C. office. Henshaw was hired for the permanent position and now assists the senator in responding to his constituents.

Other students who were in Washington, D.C. during the summer include Trent Bennion, a business major who was interning at the Republican National Committee, and Sabrina Benally, an accounting major who was completing her second internship at the Department of the Treasury.

UVU Internship Services is dedicated to helping students find internships available on campus or at local, national and even international levels.

An internship opportunity that is currently available only to UVU students is an internship with the Czech Republic. The intern will work with Martin Palous, Czech Ambassador to the U.N., and his staff along with other EU missions at the U.N. during the six-month term of the Czech Republic’s EU presidency. The internship will be from January to June 2009 and will be stationed at the Czech Republic Mission in N.Y.

To find more about this internship opportunity along with others that are available, contact UVU Career Services & Student Employment at (801) 863-6004 or csse@uvu.edu
