Taran K. Chun became the newest member of the Utah Valley University Board of Trustees on October 9. Governor Gary Herbert appointed Chun as Fidel Montero’s replacement after Montero took the chief of staff position for UVU President Matthew S. Holland.
He currently serves as principal of Mountain View High School and will continue his work of strengthening the university’s relationship with high schools. A large number of the students at Mountain View are taking courses at UVU through the concurrent enrollment program.
“As a high school principal, in fact for UVU’s high school, one perspective I can bring is that of preparing high school students to make a connection to UVU… I hope that as a school leader I bring the perspective of what UVU can do to better receive our future students,” said Chun. “I hope, as someone coming from the community, I bring an outside perspective that helps this wonderful board to see things in a different way and maybe increase dialogue.”
Chun has served as a teacher, coach and administrator for both high school and middle school. He has worked in Title I schools, including getting a Title I junior high school up to No Child Left Behind standards. Title I schools receive funding to aid at-risk and low-income students.
In 2008, Utah named Chun Outstanding Assistant Principal and in 2012 the Huntsman Corporation selected him to receive the Excellence in Education award.
