UVU to Host First Ever GWC Basketball Championships Utah Valley University was selected to host the first combined men’s and women’s Great West Conference Basketball Tournament, to be held March 10-13, 2010 at the 8,500-seat McKay Center, the league office announce Thursday.

Beckham hopes to make AC Milan permanent David Beckham is currently under contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy but is on loan to AC Milan. However, Beckham is enjoying his time in Italy so much that he wants to stay with AC Milan permanently. Milan’s vice president said he is willing to pay a fee in order to keep Beckham.

Campus Briefs STATE OF THE UNIVERSITY ADDRESS – All members of the university community are invited to attend the first “State of the University” address which will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at noon in the Ragan Theater. The annual State of the University address provides an opportunity for President Hitch to communicate to faculty, staff, students and stakeholders information on key issues that will impact the University and higher education.

Jan. 16 – DISORDLY CONDUCT – UVU Police responded to a report of a fight at College Drive in Orem. Officers arrived on the scene and found a male and female arguing while standing in the middle of the road. Both were charged with disorderly conduct.

UVU evens record at NDSU The Utah Valley University men’s basketball team dropped to 8-8 on the year Tuesday after a 71-98 loss at North Dakota State (13-5). NDSU is the current leader of the Summit League. Senior guard Ryan Toolson led the Wolverines with 27 points on the night and chipped in three rebounds and three assists.

Jeff Kent Retires Jeff Kent is hanging up his baseball cleats after a 17-year stint in Major League Baseball. Kent hit 377 total home runs and an MLB record 351 as a second baseman during the years he spent playing for the Blue Jays, Mets, Indians, Giants, Astros, and Dodgers.

National News Briefs STUDY FINDS ALZHEIMER’S DRUGS INCREASE DEATH RISK – A new study has shown that Antipsychotic drugs commonly used to treat Alzheimer’s have been shown to double the death risk in patients. The study involved 165 patients suffering from Alzheimer’s who were prescribed antipsychotic medication.

TO THE EDITOR: I object to the block art of “Police Blotter” with the polarized image of a handgun. The image placed next to the headline gives the readers the impression that the semiautomatic weapon is inherently evil and calls for gun control. As a concealed carry licensee, I take the responsibility of gun ownership and proper usage with utmost seriousness.

Former Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush undergoes surgery New Orleans Saints running back and former USC standout Reggie Bush underwent knee surgery after being placed on injured reserve in mid-December. Bush is expected to be ready for minicamp in June after several months of rehabilitation.

Rustand Announces Signing of Dane Christensen Utah Valley Director of Golf Clark Rustand has announced the signing of Dane Christensen to a National Letter of Intent. Christensen signed with Utah Valley this past November and will be an incoming freshman in the fall of 2009.

CAMPUS BRIEFS CARNEGIE ACKNOWLEDGES COMMUNITY ENGAGED UVU – The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has selected Utah Valley University as one of the newest members of its “community-engaged” classification. This classification is presented only to a fraction of universities and shows a direct reflection on the school’s involvement in and support of its community.

Dec. 4 -CHILD NEGLECT – A UVU Student is credited with potentially saving the lives of three children whom were left in a vehicle, unattended, for more than a hour. The student noticed three children, ages 2, 5 and 6, in a SUV in parking lot G. The student notified UVU Police who then responded to the scene and removed the children from the locked vehicle and placed them in a warm patrol car.

Kjar and Ray Both Perform Well at Midlands Sophomore wrestlers Benjamin Kjar (125 lbs.) and Flint Ray (133 lbs.), showcased their talents at the prestigious Midlands Championships on the campus of Northwestern University Monday and Tuesday. Kjar, who is ranked 20th nationally, finished placing eighth in his weight division as he went 3-3 overall at the invitation only tournament.
