Latino students at UVU give their opinion on the controversial candidate

As if Donald Trump’s bid for the 2016 presidential election wasn’t controversial enough,
comments he made about Mexicans and immigrants have
gotten him into a lot of trouble, and
many are responding strongly to his comments.
During his presidential announcement speech, Trump
said, “When Mexico sends its people,
they’re not sending their best. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
UVU student, Sam Castillo said, “I’m sure he knows
that Latinos are an extremely important
part of the votes, why would he go and purposely ru
in that?”
Trump’s speech prompted Puerto Rican actress, Roselyn Sánchez, to drop out of hosting duties
for Miss USA, an organization owned by Trump.
“Although I am not Mexican, I am Puerto Rican and a
proud Latina, and his comments were an
insult to our culture. I won’t sponsor anything produced by Donald Trump,” said Sanchez.
When Univision announced they were not airing the Miss USA pageant, other companies like
NBC and Macy’s department store decided to end their business relationship with the mogul.
Many Miss Universe pageant contestants from Latin America have also dropped out of the
contest.
Not everyone disagrees with Trump; according to a CNN national survey about 52 percent of
Republicans want him to stay in the race. Trump’s comments appear to be offensive, but many
Latinos agree with his stance on illegal immigration.
Edward Morfin, Spanish-speaker and maintenance worker at UVU
said, “Finally somebody gotup there and said what needed to be said. He said what everybody’s thinking but is afraid to say out loud.”
“He is a billionaire, he clearly knows what he’s doing so I think his comments about Latinos
could possibly have an ulterior motive,” said Castillo.
Trump’s comments have spawned many YouTube videos and public letters to him from immigrants who consider themselves to be hardworking, law abiding young adults. Whatever Trump’s motives are,it seems to be working after taking a look at Trump’s high poll numbers.

“Clearly Donald Trump represents all of us who feel that illegal immigrants are rapist and that women are pigs.” – Edwar Morfin
