University of Utah Valley Women’s Soccer team hosted cross town rival, No. 7 BYU on an attendance-breaking night at Clyde field. The Wolverines only found the back of the net one time in a 6-1 loss, falling to 2-3-1 on the year.

The crowd was electric to start the game. “The community really showed up for us tonight,” Coach Chris Lemay added, “We’re grateful they packed Clyde Field.” There was a record breaking 4,742 fans that came to support our Wolverines face the Cougars on a beautiful night.

The 4,742 fans broke the previous Clyde Field record of 3,952 set on Sept. 16, 2019, against BYU.

The Cougars did not waste a minute to start rolling as they came out scoring two quick goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. The first was recorded in the 10th minute as Breckie Mozingo found a hole in the defense and fired a shot down the middle to give BYU an early lead.

Allie Fryer and Erin Bailey were the next to score for the Cougars as BYU took a commanding 3-0 lead in the 34th minute.

Sadie Beardall erupted the crowd as she headed off Heather Stainbrook’s free kick 30 yards out in the 36th minute.

However, it did not take long for the Cougars to add to their lead. Bailey scored her second goal just one minute later after Tara Warner’s shot was deflected by Idalia Serrano giving BYU a 4-1 lead heading into the half.

The Wolverines competed with the Cougars as they controlled most of the possessions and shots on goal.

It was not until the 61st minute that Ellie Boren got the Cougars back on the board in the second half as she skied a shot over a row of Wolverine defenders that fit perfectly between Leah Wolf’s outstretched arms and the crossbar.

Ellie Walbruch was the last to score for the Cougars in the 81st minute, capping off a 6-1 win for the Cougars to improve to a perfect 6-0-0.

“We came up with a game plan based on the personnel we had available,” head coach Chris Lemay said after the game. “In moments, the game plan worked, in others they exposed us. They are a very good team, nothing but credit to them.”

The game consisted of the battle of sisters on the field. Redshirt senior Jenna Shepherd Gremillion faced her two sisters: Jamie and Josie Shepherd. This is the fifth time that Jenna and Jamie have faced off, with Jamie and the Cougars coming out victorious in four of the five matches.

The senior Jamie Shepherd played 49 minutes recording one shot while Jenna saw 56 minutes of field time with no stats recorded.

This was Jenna and Josie’s first collegiate match against each other. Freshman Josie Shepherd saw no action in the match.

The Wolverines suffered their third loss in the last four matches, scoring just one goal and surrendering 13.

Lemay and the Wolverines look to improve next week as they travel to Los Angeles to take on another ranked opponent in No. 19 USC on Sept. 7 at 4:00 P.M MT.

This game will air live and can be streamed on ESPN+.
