Utah Valley women drop conference opener to New Mexico State

Las Cruces, N.M. — The Wolverine women opened WAC play Thursday with a 73-68 loss to New Mexico State. A slow start to the second half sunk UVU in what was a close game throughout as they were outscored 15-9 in the third quarter.

Deijah Blanks led the Wolverines with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three point range.  Blanks also grabbed eight rebounds.  Joining her in double digits was Sam Loggins and Mariah Seals with 16 and 11 points, respectively.  Loggins recorded a double-double, also coming up with 11 rebounds.WBBMSOCWSOC-7648

UVU outrebounded their opponent 46-35 but miscues overcame the Wolverine offense as they turned the ball over 16 times compared to NMSU’s eight turnovers.

NMSU’s Moriah Mack led all scorers with 21 points and also contributed two rebounds and four assists.  Brianna Freeman and Sasha Weber had 15 and 11, respectively.  Tamera William recorded 10 rebounds for the Aggies.

UVU will continue conference play Saturday when they travel to Edinburg, Texas to take on the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.  Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. with a live online stream available via the WAC Digital Network.
