Women’s soccer: UVU beats Idaho State on the road, snaps winless streak

POCATELLO, Idaho — With a day full of first times and season highs, the Utah Valley University women’s soccer team came away with a decisive win over the Idaho State Bengals by a final score of 5-1. With the win, UVU not only snaps a three-game winless streak, but also improves to 5-3-1 on the season. Idaho State slides to a 3-7 record.

This win marks the first time this season UVU has scored five goals. The last time UVU netted five goals was in its previous meeting against Idaho State at Clyde Field, Sept. 10, 2015.

The first goal came off the foot of Sydney Fitzpatrick in the 9th minute after she dribbled right past one defender, for her first goal of the season. ISU then found the back of the net in the 55th minute to even the score 1-1.

Late in the match, UVU scored a string of four straight goals. The first score came off a penalty kick in the 70th minute, Breanna DeWaal scored after she was fouled in the box. This marks her first career goal. Sarah Cipperley was assisted by DeWaal in the 74th minute to score her first goal of the year, as she fired a shot from the top of the box.

DeWaal was credited with yet another assist in the 87th minute with a pass to Leesa Stowe, who scored her first career goal.

The final goal was scored by Alexis Peterson in the 88th minute, which was her fourth goal of the season.

UVU outshot ISU with a season-high 31 shots to 10. The Wolverines also recorded a season-high 13 corner kicks and 15 shots on goal.

UVU will face off against Grand Canyon at Clyde Field on Monday, Sept. 26, to open conference play. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT.
