UVU sophomore Deijah Blanks scored 29 points to help the UVU women shake off a slow start Thursday to beat Chicago State 69-62. The big win puts UVU at 13-13 on the season and 6-5 in conference play. The Wolverines are now in place for the third seed in the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
UVU started the first quarter with a few quick turnovers leading to Chicago State points and came out of the period in a 20-14 hole before a strong second quarter from the Wolverines ended in a 31-31 tie.
The third quarter was tightly contested but a 6-0 run by Karlee Norris and Deijah Blanks put UVU up 45-40 at the end of the quarter. From there the Wolverines simply had to hold the lead through a close fourth quarter which they were able to do successfully.

Blanks finished with a game-high 29 points, 10 rebounds and three steals and didn’t miss a single shot on the night, finishing 10-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. She also shot 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Blanks is the only play in NCAA Division I women’s basketball to have perfect shooting night on field goals, 3-pointers, and free throws with a minimum of 10 attempts.
Joining Blanks in double digit scoring were Mariah Seals and Karlee Norris with 12 and 10, respectively. Seals also added five rebounds and four steals.
Chicago State was led by Kaylee Allen and Layne Murphy with 19 points apiece in the losing effort.
The Wolverines will look to stay hot on the back end of their two-game road trip as they take on the University of Missouri – Kansas City February 20. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
I grew up on a farm in Burley, Idaho, but I've always had an intense love of sports. I'm studying journalism in an attempt to turn my love into a career. I'm a huge Utah Jazz, Tennessee Titans, and San Jose Sharks fan. If it's a sport, I'll watch it.
