The Wolverines stay at top of WAC with wins Friday and Sunday against Grand Canyon and Cal State Bakersfield

Christian Ledek | Sports Writer | @sea_led

Orem, UT – The Utah Valley University women’s soccer team won both of their matches on Friday and Sunday to finish their home schedule without a loss. The Wolverines beat Grand Canyon and Cal State Bakersfield 3-1 and 3-2 respectively, moving their record to 11-4-1 on the year and 6-0-1 in conference play and remaining in first place in the Western Athletic Conference.

Friday night, UVU was in full control of the match from the start of the whistle. They netted three first half goals, two coming from seniors on senior night. Seniors Kasandra Anderson and Jamie Brown scored the game’s first and third goals, while junior Taylor Kirk scored the second goal. While the Wolverines continued to create scoring chances, they were unable to find the net again.

Sunday’s match was similar to Friday’s match, as the Wolverines dominated the first half. They had most of the possession and created the most scoring opportunities. Junior Sheridan Fox scored a brace, getting both of her goals within fifteen minutes of each other in the 27th minute and 45th minute. Senior Kasandra Anderson was able to put a goal away to give UVU a 3-0 lead. Credit goes to the ‘Runners of Cal State Bakersfield as they kept fighting to stay in the match. They found the net twice in the second half but ran out of gas as the Wolverines held on for the victory.

“There were 5-10 minutes where we were unorganized and Cal State Bakersfield capitalized,” head coach Brent Anderson said of Cal State Bakersfield.   “They’re a good team, but I’m really happy the way we played today, defensively, creating scoring opportunities and our possession was good…we’ll have to check the history books but this might be the first time we’ve ever gone undefeated at home. I’m very proud of the team.”

The last three games of the regular season are all on the road for the Wolverines. Their next game is Friday October 23 against Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Arizona. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST.
