Defending champs score golden goal to take victory over Wolverines

Las Vegas, NV — The UNLV Rebels scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute of play to defeat the Utah Valley University Wolverines 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Johann Field.

The loss drops UVU to 12-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. UNLV improves to 10-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in WAC play.

UNLV got on the board first thanks to a when Andy Rodriguez scored from 18 yards out in the 12th minute.

UVU answered back when Austin Buxton drew a foul in the penalty area to earn a penalty kick.  He calmly put the ball in the back of the net on the kick to tie the match at one in the 17th minute.  It was his fifth goal of the season.

The game remained tied as both teams couldn’t capitalize on scoring opportunities in the second half.

Two minutes into overtime, Shota Takada scored the golden goal on the back post off a cross from Rodrigo Fuentes, giving UNLV the win 2-1.

UNLV outshot the Wolverines 15-8  in the match and also had six corner kicks compared to just two for UVU.

UVU returns home to face Incarnate Word on October 29.
