The UVU men’s lacrosse team played their first divisional game of the season Saturday afternoon when they took their in-state rivals, the fifth-ranked Griffins of Westminster in Salt Lake City. The Griffins would go on to beat the Wolverines by a final score of 18-3.
With the tough loss the Wolverines have lost three of four to start the season, dropping their record to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Conference with five games remaining in the season. The loss puts UVU in fourth place in the conference.
New UVU coach David Williams explained how he felt his team played after being outmatched by the fifth-ranked Griffins.
“Considering we only had 4 substitutes I think we did really well,” Williams said. “It’s been a rebuilding year for us. We’ve got a young team, so a lot of it is just getting the guys out on the field and getting them feeling what needs to happen and to know the direction we are going as a program.”
The main goal that Williams would like to see his team achieve over the last five games of the season is for the team to finish their season on a high note by having a winning record.
“Our main goal is to end the season with a winning record, which I feel is very achievable for us for the rest of the year,” Williams said. “We’ve played four games so we’re 1-3 right now. We have five games remaining and of those we’re expecting to go 5-0 the rest of the season it will be a really good build for us heading forward into next year.”
The Wolverines will be back in action at home next Saturday, March 24, when they will host Montana State University at 12 p.m. The men’s lacrosse team still has some big games left of the schedule against Northern Colorado, Western State, and the season finale in Logan on April 20 against the Utah State Aggies.
