NFL
Among the San Diego County fire evacuees were members of the San Diego Chargers. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson and quarterback Phillip Rivers were among the 40 members of the organization evacuated form their homes last week. The team also cancelled practices and moved practice to the Arizona Cardinals facilities in Tempe, Ariz. The team’s field, Qualcomm Stadium, was used as an evacuation center.

Women’s soccer
U.S. Women’s soccer doesn’t make headlines very often, nor does any soccer in this country, but after the team’s World Cup semi-final loss 4-0 to Brazil, starting goalkeeper Hope Solo addressed her displeasure with Coach Greg Ryan. Ryan benched Solo before the game and she said she would have made some of the saves and went off on Ryan’s poor decision. Now Ryan is out of a job after the team took third in World cup.

NBA
Preseason is over and the games that count begin Oct. 30 in the NBA. As always, off-season moves should make people watch another year. Kevin Garnet is out of Minnesota and part of Boston’s three-headed monster. Kobe Bryant is disgruntled in L.A. and the San Antonio Spurs skated through the summer unnoticed as usual. They make their mark when it counts and avoid controversy but they keep winning.
