Fairbanks poised to lead team to 20-win season

Last season the women’s basketball team won 16 games and they were also undefeated in the McKay Center. Their success has been largely based on Robyn Fairbanks.

Fairbanks hales from Alberta, Canada and loves the outdoors. The two-time All-American has dominated opponents in the past and her senior season as a Wolverine appears it will be no different. However, unfortunately her family isn’t able to be at every game — they remain in Canada. “The drive [from Canada to Utah] takes about ten to eleven hours,” Fairbanks said.

In her career she has 32 career double-doubles and has scored double figures in 53 consecutive games dating back to her sophomore year. She also holds many school records.

UVU Review sports writer Reed Noble sat down with Fairbanks in a Q and A session to reveal more about UVU’s post sensation.

Q: What goals do you have this year, personal and for the team?

A: 20-win season and get some wins on the road.

Q: What is the focus this year for winning on the road?

A: Focus on each game — it’s the same game anywhere you play it. We just need to get it done.

Q: As a team, what can be improved?

A: Our turnover average was bad last year. We are going to focus this year on taking care of the ball, on boxing out to get more rebounds, and working together to be a great team.

Not only is Robyn a star basketball player today, but she was in high school as well where she played volleyball.

Q: What made you choose basketball over volleyball?

A: Volleyball wasn’t taken as seriously. I started playing later on. It was just for fun. There was more basketball where I grew up; and all of my siblings played basketball.

Q: How was growing up and playing sports in Canada?

A: In Canada we take sports seriously. Sports are a very big deal there.
