Big numbers in big win over the Coyotes

Justin Baker and Geddes Robinson both have record-breaking game.

Utah Valley’s only conference loss this season was Jan. 22 when they faced the University of South Dakota. Last Thursday, the Wolverines looked to not repeat that when the Coyotes came to town.

And they did just that, taking the win, 94-79, over the Coyotes.

“We got out of the blocks well, we were able to get good ball movement and I thought we did a nice job of balancing the game,” said Coach Dick Hunsaker. “We did a good job of keeping things in check with inside touches and kicking the ball out and I thought we did a very nice job on the backboards and took care of the basketball.”

The first eight minutes of play were minutes where 3-pointers controlled the scoreboard for the Wolverines. Freshman Holton Hunsaker, junior Isiah Williams and senior Jordan Swarbrick together sunk eight shots from behind the arc.

The 3-pointers didn’t continue as quickly as they began, but the scoring did. At the half, the Wolverines had given themselves a 13-point lead going into the locker room at 51-38.

Both teams remained scoreless nearly two minutes into the second half until Utah Valley’s Geddes Robinson went up for a lay-up.

The Wolverines kept their gap large and took it to as much as 16 in the second half, securing them the win.

Freshman Ben Aird led the Wolverines offensively, putting up 18 points and bringing down nine rebounds.

A handful of Wolverines followed Aird, putting up big points. Senior Justin Baker put up a season-high 17 points, Williams finished with 17, Holton Hunsaker with 16, and Swarbrick with 12.

“I think Justin was at his best and ended up with a heck of a statistical game and was very productive,” said Coach Hunsaker. “If we get everybody going and playing well we can be productive in a lot of positions.”

Wolverine Geddes Robinson finished with a double-double, 15 points and 13 rebounds, while breaking the school record of double-doubles in a season with seven.

The Wolverines will play their final regular season home game this Saturday when they host Houston Baptist at 7:00 p.m. in the UCCU Center.
