Athletics helped a happy couple get engaged during halftime of last Thursday’s homecoming game.

Last Thursday’s homecoming game halftime saw a big surprise for one lucky audience member who walked away with a diamond ring.

UVU freshman Katie Sawatzki was chosen by the UVU Athletics Marketing department to participate in a halftime half court shot activity, but that was just to get her in the spotlight and out onto the court.

Sawatzki’s half court shot attempt was just that, an attempt. The crowd gave her a mercy applause anyway and as she was walking off the court her boyfriend, UVU junior David Millet, stepped onto the court with a microphone.

After saying a few words to Sawatzki, Millet got down on one knee and proposed.

Shaking and jumping up and down, Sawatzki said yes.

Millet and Sawatzki have been dating for the last three months and just a little over a week ago Millet decided this was how he wanted to ask Sawatzki to marry him.

“I came up with the idea and got some help from the athletic department,” said Millet.

Although the lucky couple had talked a little bit about marriage, Sawatzki was shocked. “I was freaking out,” said Sawatzki. “I had no idea at all.”

Being proposed to at a UVU basketball game was okay for Sawatzki. “I loved it, I think it was so good! So good, even though I had to go shoot,” said Sawatzki.

Not many halftime shows at UVU include a marriage proposal, but the UVU Athletics department was all for it. “Once in a while we’ll get approached to do some thing like that and I think it’s a fun thing, especially if it is for one of our students,” said Nate Mathis, Assistant AD, Corporate Partners and Marketing for UVU Athletics. “Anything for the students.”
