There are a lot of important things many new students don’t know when they start their first semester of college. These tips can make a first semester a great semester for a new student.

One stop is a huge help for students and can cover a lot of things at once. One Stop can assist students with admissions, transcripts, parking stickers, financial aid and scholarships, tuition payments, and registering for classes.

Lines for One stop get long quickly, especially toward the beginning of the semester. Getting there early will help to avoid the lines. One stop is located in BA 106 and is open Mondays, Thursdays, & Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Parking can be confusing the first time. UVU offers many different options for parking starting at free to $80 per year. Permits can be purchased for individual semesters or for a year at a time.

The free lot has a campus shuttle that runs continuously 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.

Parking Services is located just east of campus at 936 S. 400 W. and is open Monday, Thursday, Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and can be reached at 863-8188.

Purchasing textbooks can get pricy, very quickly. The campus bookstore is not the only option for purchasing books. Although the campus bookstore offers new, as well as used books, there are other outlets for purchasing textbooks.

Other alternatives include buying books online from other college students on sites such as Half.com. A new book-buying alternative is renting textbooks online for the semester. Chegg.com is a website dedicated to issuing textbook rentals for college students and can save a lot of money in some cases.

UVU offers tutoring labs free of charge to help students succeed. There are labs for math, writing and peer tutoring which offers tutors for many different classes.

The math lab is a place that students can go to do homework and get assistance with their math courses. Experienced tutors offer free one-on-one tutoring as well as assisted study groups. The math lab is located in LA 201.

The peer tutor lab offers tutoring for a wide variety of courses and is also located in LA 201.

The writing lab is now located in LI 208 and offers students help with writing principles and also helps students to improve their writing skills.

The library itself offers many helpful services to students. Library services include research tools such as articles, encyclopedias, books, journals, research guides, and interlibrary loans. The library has plenty of computers, study tables, and study rooms for students to use.

The library also keeps some textbooks on hand for students to check out for a couple hours at a time for studying in the library.

Finially, academic advisors are there to help students. At the start of a new semester the appointments and lines for seeing your advisor can get long, so get in early to speak to them.
