Design a wrap for the Scion IQ and you could could a $1,000 text-book scholarship.

UVU Athletics and Brent Brown Toyota of Orem teamed up to create a unique opportunity for students to put their design skills to the test – a school-themed car wrap competition.

The competition was announced and kicked off Feb. 25 at the last UVU Men’s Basketball home game against the University of Texas-Pan American.

With the recent release of the Toyota Scion IQ, Brent Brown Toyota wanted a way to promote this new highly fuel efficient and affordable car to the first time buyer and get students excited about it, particularly those looking to buy a new car.

Current UVU students can download entry forms from the Brent Brown Toyota Facebook page (Facebook.com/BrentBrownToyota). Entrants must post designs to the contest Facebook page no later than 11 p.m. on Mar. 25. Public voting will take place on Facebook the following week. Full rules and timelines are available on the Facebook page.

Brent Brown approached the Athletics Department with the idea and was received with great enthusiasm.

“We have been working with Andon and Pilmer PR and through them and with them we contacted UVU athletics,” explained Dustin Lyons, Scion manager at Brent Brown Toyota.

“We came up with the idea of the wrap and promoting the IQ,” said Lyons. “We have had it for a month. It’s a brand new car – just barely out so we made contact with the athletics department, gave them our proposal, they had some ideas and we all collaborated and found something that would work. A week and a half ago we had one of the cars inside the basketball arena. They have been very supportive. We had the cheerleaders in it and climb out of it at halftime.”

Lyons says not only will this competition give students the chance to win a textbook scholarship; they will be able to apply their studies, skills and use the design as a portfolio piece.

A winner will be announced at a special ceremony held at Brent Brown Toyota Scion. They will then have their design applied to UVU’s Scion IQ from Brent Brown Toyota of Orem and receive a $1,000 textbook scholarship from the local dealership.

Queen of Wraps – a Salt Lake City company, will apply the wrap and UVU’s new Scion IQ will be unveiled on May 1 at the UVU vs. BYU baseball game. Details of the presentation have not been finalized but the unveiling will take place during part of the game.

The car will be used by UVU for a year at sporting and parade events.

Lyons is enthusiastic about the competition and the purpose behind it. “This competition is a really good way to engage the UVU students,” said Lyons. “This give’s them something to work on that’s a little bit different then their everyday schoolwork.”
