UVote

Beginning today and continuing through Sept. 30, students will have the opportunity to register to vote.

The UVUSA, along with other entities on campus, will be sponsoring the 2010 UVote Voter Registration Drive.

A table will be set up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in various locations around campus where students can register to vote.

The goal is to get as many to register as possible. Aside from encouraging students to fulfill their civic duty, the Utah Student Association will be holding two competitions between the higher education institutions in the state.

The Utah Student Association works closely with the Utah State Board of Regents, the Commissioner of Higher Education and the State Legislature.

“All of these people eventually determine how much money gets appropriated to UVU and a weak showing in voter registration could impact how much money we are given for the next year,” said Nefi Acosta, UVU chief justice.

The first competition the Utah Student Association will be having is to see which institution can register the most students and the second will be who can register the most students per capita.

All students need to provide in order to register is their name, address, date of birth, place of birth and either their driver’s license number, a state issued ID or the last four digits of their social security number.

During the Gubernatorial Debate at noon on Oct. 6 here at UVU, the winner of the competition will be announced.
“For us to host the event and not win would be pretty embarrassing,” Acosta said.

There are also other incentives for students to register. When students register to vote they will automatically be entered into a giveaway for a 32-inch flat screen TV, an Ipod Touch, two Ipod Nanos and two $100 vouchers to the bookstore.

The winners will be announced on Oct. 6 during Wolverine Wednesday, and students must be present to win.
