Filmmaker and cult icon Trent Harris will be on campus this Tuesday to show one of his latest projects, Children of the Dump.
The film follows Scott Neeson, a former 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures Entertainment executive. After a trip to Cambodia where he witnessed the conditions some children were living in, Neeson is reported to have left his position at Sony and has spent the last several years in Cambodia, working for an organization called the Cambodian Children’s Fund.
According to the charity’s website, CCF provides health care, food, training and education to “more than 700 children.”
Harris, known for his films Plan 10 From Outer Space, The Beaver Trilogy, and Rubin and Ed, among others, is now a producer for PBS. He has made several trips to Cambodia covering Neeson’s work for PBS and KSL, in addition to his own film.
According to a press release from the Peace and Justice Studies Program, which is sponsoring the event, Harris’ recent work has focused on problems in the developing world.
The film’s title is derived from the practice of young children picking through garbage in order to fish out valuable goods that have been thrown away such as plastic or metal, which is common in the parts of Cambodia where the CCF operates.
The screening will also include a presentation by Harris and will take place in the Library Auditorium (LI 120) on Sept. 28 from 1-2:15 p.m.
