[Question] If five years from now your parent, sibling, and friend are interviewed for a success story on you for the local newspaper, what would you want them to say about you?
[Answer] I would hope that my parents would say that I’m their favorite child and that they always believed in me. Mostly, I would hope that my parents are proud, my siblings are pleased and that my friends are slightly jealous.
[Question] Do you feel that UVU prepared you for your future career and other endeavors?
[Answer] UVU has prepared me for the future in a way I didn’t expect. I have learned to become more friendly, more open and willing to share. I feel that I have learned how to serve those around me from the example of the staff and professors I’ve come in contact with. UVU’s motto of engaged learning has come to hold a special place in my heart because the service learning opportunities presented here have truly opened up doors that I did not expect myself to explore.
[Question] Who has been your mentor/example? Someone on campus you talked to frequently, someone who represented an ideal, a friend who pushed you to keep going, a parent/family member who loved and helped you?
[Answer] Oh, I’ve had too many mentors to count them all. Of course, my most trusted mentor has been my mother. Since my family lives in the Middle East for the whole time I’ve been at UVU, it has been really easy for me to become overwhelmed with homesickness. But whenever those feelings of loneliness got hard to handle, I was able to turn to many women on campus who gave me support and comfort in the tough times: Kimberly Barraclough, Eva Bernfeld, Marcy Glassford, Melissa Jewett, Martha Wilson, Shalece Nuttall, Peggy Pasin, Yazmine Steward, Diane Bouchetti, Carlee Johnson, Tiffany Harris and many others!
AS Valedictorian
Diesel Mechanic Technology
[Answer] My goals were to do the best I can (which I did not think was going to be an A student) and just make my family proud. As a freshman when I started in the Diesel Program I thought, “Oh boy what have I got myself in to, I hope I can pass these classes.”
[Question] Who has been your mentor/example? Someone on campus you talked to frequently, someone who represented an ideal, a friend who pushed you to keep going, a parent/family member who loved and helped you?
[Answer] I’ve had 3 mentors the whole time: Roland Hamilton (my Uncle), Dean Bohl (an instructor here) and Kelvyn Blackhurst (also an instructor here). But my wife and daughter have been the ones to push me to keep going.
[Question] What will you miss the most, if anything?
[Answer] I’ll miss getting tools for half off and having an overhead crane in the shop, but I definitely won’t miss living in Orem. My wife and I are from a small town.
