In an effort to raise awareness about the “Go Green” campaign, UVUSA will be hosting a campuswide essay contest.
In September 2008 the Sustainability Committee was created in an effort to promote environmental awareness and the benefits of living a sustainable lifestyle. Since that time members of the committee and student association have worked with student council members and administration to better inform students about the green initiative.
“Under the direction of the president we have been doing a lot of stuff to push the Green Initiative,” said Assistant to the Student Body President Richard Doxey. “Our purpose is to create excitement about sustainability and show why it’s so important.”
The committee and its members continually brainstorm ideas on how to make students more aware. Their goal is to educate the student body while showing ways they can be involved in the UVU community and help with the cause.
“We felt one way to help students be a little more involved on campus would be to have an essay contest about going green, living a sustainable lifestyle and the importance of it,” said Doxey. “We want to perk people’s interest in going green and really make them think about it.”
The topic of the essay is the importance of going green and living a sustainable lifestyle. The one-page essays are due March 17 and should be submitted via email at uvusa@uvu.edu.
There is also an incentive for this contest. The winner will receive a $300 cash award and will have their essay published in the UVU Review. The two runners-up will receive $100 cash awards.
“We think that this is a great way to connect with the students and let them know what’s going on,” said Doxey. “That’s the real purpose behind it.”
