Located adjacent to the Nordstrom in Orem’s University Mall, the Woodbury Art Museum is an official extension of Utah Valley University, despite its distance from campus. Led by director and curator Marcus Alan Vincent, the Woodbury remains a fascinating destination for students and non-students alike, even in the summer.
While class offerings are substantially smaller during the summer months, the museum continues to be open to the public. Starting June 11, the Museum will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Also beginning June 11 is a new exhibit, “Art of OUR CENTURY.” An opening reception will be held that evening from 6-8 p.m. Showing through July 23, the exhibit features artists from Utah, Idaho, Colorado and California.
The Woodbury Art Museum was first opened in 2001, due to a generous donation from Orin and Wally Woodbury. As owners of the Woodbury Corporation, who manage University Mall, they allowed the museum to relocate from its small space on campus to a larger location on the upper floor of what used to be the JC Penny’s department store. The museum continues to expand, and a proposed on-campus Center for the Arts building will potentially serve as a permanent home for the museum.
In addition to the temporary exhibits, the Woodbury also holds a permanent collection of work and always displays selections from it. The Neibaur collection, part of a long-term loan from the collection of Dale and Teresa Neibaur, features fantasy art from works as diverse as Lord of the Rings and Phantom of the Opera.
