The creative writing faculty will be holding the second annual Sleeping Rainbow Writer’s Workshop at UVU’s Capitol Reef Field Station on Sept. 15-18. This workshop is for full-time students who are passionate about creative writing in the areas of poetry, creative nonfiction and fiction.

The cost is a low $25, which includes transportation, lodging and meals. It is a great opportunity for aspiring authors to get away and be able to write in a beautiful and educational atmosphere. The retreat includes workshops, individual writing time, guest speakers, and nature excursions.

“Every good thing that can happen in a classroom is magnified and enriched when students and professors can come together simply as human beings, and the Sleeping Rainbow Retreat afforded us this gift,” said Dr. Karin Anderson, an English professor specializing in creative nonfiction. “The orange cliffs, perfect air, the heartbreaking recovery of stars in the black night sky turned all of us, for a while, into the natural poets this planet made us to be: communal, spontaneous, generous and eloquent.”

The retreat is sponsored and funded by the UVU Center for Engaged Learning and the UVU English Department. Students who are interested applying for the Sleeping Rainbow Writer’s Workshop can submit a creative writing sample, a maximum of 10 pages of poetry or 6000 words of prose, along with a cover letter that includes contact information, major and year to the English Department (LA 114) or send an email to scott.hatch@uvu.edu. The application deadline is July 2, 2010.
