Wick, a one-woman play by Claudia Stevens, is scheduled to be performed on campus on September 7. The play is about Miriam Rothschild, a British environmentalist who is considered a champion of animal rights.
Set in 1984, Wick follows Rothschild as she visits a group of American students and shares ideas with them while she plans to give a significant lecture at Oxford University called “Animals and Man.”
Rothschild, who died in 2005, was an interesting activist who also studied entomology and chemistry. In addition, she worked with the UK government in World War II to offer German Jews solace from Nazi Germany. She was known as a bit of an eccentric who was a vegetarian and was always sure to wear leather-free clothing.
Claudia Stevens is considered nationally recognized as a musician, playwright and performance artist, as well as a speaker about issues of gender, justice and religion. She incorporates music within her one-woman play, as well as audience participation. Wick should be both fun and enlightening for animal rights activists on campus.
