Bringing attention and recognition to the Capital Reef Field station was the goal of the celebration held in the Sorensen Center on Thursday, Feb. 19.
The celebration featured many performances from live music to dances. Alongside the performances were several booths run by different organizations and a film showing pictures of the station and important related events.
Gary Nielsen who is part of the upcoming community education experiences happening at the field station manned a booth at the celebration.
“Were trying to get more publicity out so more people have a chance to experience it,” Nielsen said.
A community education trip in March will be the first trip open to the community as a whole. Some of the activities will include making pottery and exploring a local archaeological site. The trip will be March 25-28 and costs $685.
At the celebration, prizes were given away every 15 minutes throughout the entire program. Also, the first 50 people through the door received a free headlamp as a prize.
The Outdoor Adventure Center ran several contests to win prizes, such as a pull-up competition for a backpack, and a tent-pitching race in which the winner was awarded the tent. There was also a sleeping bag up for grabs.
“I had lots of fun trying to win the sleeping bag,” said Nick Phinney, a UVU student. “Also, there was good food.”
There are several field trips planed for the spring to the field station. Biology 204R and 3800, Botany 2100 and 4300, and English 486R and 4310 will be classes using the field station. There will also be planning meetings and other events held this spring.
