As the weather changes, UVU is promoting student health by offering flu shots, at a reduced cost and body fat/blood pressure testing at no cost.
Wellness Programs and Student Health Services are offering these services on campus Oct. 7-8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Science Building Atrium. However, students can make an appointment with Wellness Programs to have their body fat/blood pressure tested any time.
According to the Center for Disease Control, as seasonal temperatures decrease, the spread of flu increases, particularly around finals week, and continues well into spring semester.
“We always like to emphasize progress over perfection when we have students come in to get their tests done,” said Sarah Graves, coordinator for wellness programs. “We understand that a person’s body fat numbers can be sensitive, but there is help at every size.”
In addition to this opportunity on campus there are a variety of different services offered by both wellness programs and Student Health Services that go under utilized by students.
“It is very beneficial for students to know their numbers and not just rely on doctors to know their information,” said Graves, “People should take an investment in their own health.”
Student Health Services offer the same features as a doctor’s office with the convenience of never having to leave campus. Their services are partially paid for by the university, and doctor appointments are available at $10. Medication refills, insulin injections, allergy immunizations and other options are available.
It is a myth that people can get the flu from getting a flu shot, said Derrick Pickering, a nurse practitioner at student health services, but there is a chance of getting a few symptoms for about a day.
Wellness Programs meanwhile offer health risk appraisals, weekly health activities, massage services and wellness workshops for students.
