Utah Valley Wrestling coach Greg Williams announced that he will retire as head coach following the 2023-2024 season ending his 18-year career with the Wolverines.
Williams, who is only the second coach in the program’s 20-year history, had this to say about his coaching experience with the Wolverines per a press release from Utah Valley Athletics Tuesday afternoon.
“Working at UVU has been a wonderful experience for me and my family. We are grateful for the opportunities provided at this progressive institution,” Williams said. “It has been an amazing experience working with the outstanding student-athletes that have come through the program.”
Williams coached Utah Valley during its inaugural 2015-2016 season during the Big 12 conference, which is known for one of the more prominent wrestling conferences in the country.
Williams coached Demetrius Romero to two Big 12 titles in addition to eight other conference championships through the program’s history.
“Greg Williams has poured his heart and soul into this program and we’re grateful and appreciative of the mark he and his family will have left on Utah Valley University wrestling,” UVU athletic director Jared Sumsion said. “His dedication to developing these young men as student-athletes and for preparing them for life after wrestling is extraordinary.”
As a team, Utah Valley finished with a 3-9 record last season that saw three one-time NCAA qualifiers and one three-time qualifier and 2021 All-American in Romero.
“Some highlights for me when I look back at my time here will be how our student-athletes’ consistently represented our school, our program and themselves with integrity, their ability to respond to tough schedules and obstacles throughout each season to be prepared for post-season, our academic successes and our mentor program,” Williams said.
Utah Valley has not announced a replacement for Williams following the season. The season is set to start near the end of October with an official schedule that has not been released.
