Students in the Live Sound Reinforcement course offered by the Digital Dedia department will be putting their skills to the test this week when they run the sound for a concert at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo.
The students will set up a professional sound system and mix a full set by the Brandie Frampton Band, a local rock/country group. This will take place at 7:30 p.m. on April 14. “The students are in charge of the whole production,” said Aaron Kopp, the class instructor. “This includes production management, taking care of the band, setting up the sound system and running all aspects of the sound system.”
Students expect to learn a lot from the experience, and see if they have what it takes to put on a successful, well put together sounding show.
“I think that doing a ticketed event is the closest to practical application as a student can get in their education,” said digital media student Anson Wing. “It gives you a complete, real-world, hands-on experience.”
The event will give students the opportunity to understand the process of producing sound for a professional concert.
“[It will provide] a greater appreciation of how complex a concert is to put on and how much work goes into it,” said digital media student Jared Henrickson. “Now, when I go to pay the fee for a concert, I won’t feel so bad about the price.”
Students will have to overcome the obstacles and last-minute issues that arise before the opening notes on concert night.
“In this industry you can read all of the texts books you want, but they all paint a perfect picture. The real world is far from a perfect picture,” said Kopp. “I want the students to know the physics, and electrical engineering behind every sound system they may set up.”
The class expects to have a good turn-out, and an audience full of their peers.
“It’s going to be a great sounding and fun concert,” said Wing. “Support is important at our school, and I think that students will recognize that this is a great way to support others.”
Tickets to the concert are $3 for students, $5 for the general public, and can be purchased at the Covey Center for the Arts box office or at www.coveycenter.org.
