Wolverines finish 15th at the GCU Invitational

The Utah Valley University women’s golf team finished in 15th place at the Grand Canyon University Invitational on Tuesday at the GCU Golf Course in Phoenix, Arizona.

As a team, the Wolverines shot 54-over-par 918 (307, 309, and 302), just three strokes behind the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds and 21 strokes in front of the Eastern Washington University Eagles

Five Wolverines competed for UVU in Leighton Shosted, Caylyn Ponich, Abbey Porter, Pati Uluave, and Victoria Estrada

Shosted led the way for the Wolverines, going 6-over-par 222 (71, 78, and 73). Her 1-over-par final round was able to propel her three spots to tie for 38th place.

Ponich finished tied for 49th place, going 10-over-par 226 (77, 75, and 74).

Porter ended six strokes behind Ponich, finishing the invitational 16-over-par 232 (81, 76, and 75). She finished tied for 71st place after rising four spots following a 3-over-par finish in the final round.

Uluave finished not too far behind Porter, going 22-over-par 238 (78, 80, and 80), and ending the tournament tied for 82nd. 

Estrada finished 93rd overall, closing out the tournament 48-over-par 264 (84, 91, and 89) for the Wolverines. 

The GCU Invitational featured 17 teams total, including four other schools from the Western Athletic Conference, and the University of Louisiana – Monroe Warhawks won the entire tournament, going 19-under-par 845 (284, 283, and 278).

The Wolverines next compete in the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah from March 9-11. The invitational will be hosted by SUU.
