The Utah Valley University lacrosse team was on fire the weekend of April 9-10 as they demolished opponents from Northern Arizona and Montana State.
The Wolverines played Northern Arizona on April 9 and triumphed with a final score of 26-5. The team meshed perfectly and played phenomenally, leaving Northern Arizona in the dust from the get-go.
Halftime brought a score of 18-2 with six of Utah Valley’s goals being scored by Brian Tyrrell. Northern Arizona was able to score three goals to Utah Valley’s eight in the final half.
Coach Kevin Perkins recognized Ryan Cantwell as a key player who is able to do whatever is asked of him. Cantwell played long pole defense.
Perkins also credited defensive midfielder Clark Harris with aiding in the team’s success. “He could be put on any of their attack and shut them down,” he said.
The team next battled Montana State on April 10 where they continued to play exceptionally and collected another victory with a final score of 18-6.
Freshman and midfielder Jake Hansen had a great game with two goals and one assist along with Austin Nielsen. “Austin dominates face off and just buries the other teams,” said Perkins.
Coach Perkins feels confident about the teams’ chances at the Conference Championships which will be held April 30-May 3. “The hard task now is taking success and running with it,” explained Perkins. “We don’t need to make any changes, we just need to improve our foundation and communication.”
Senior and defensive player Skyler Bentley shares Perkins’s confidence. “These games are a good way for us to come together and establish a good foundation for conference,” stated Bentley. “If we play as good as we have we should make a championship game.”
