When it comes to politics, I generally like to just stay away. I really don’t know much. I mean, I read a lot about it and I try to understand, but it just gets so hard to follow when there is all this information being released about both sides and how both are, apparently, bad for the U.S.
I know enough to be able to say this however, things aren’t great here in the country we call home. An economy in desperate need, lawmakers who can’t agree on a thing and a presidential race slowly sinking towards what is essentially juvenile name-calling.
I see all that is happening in America and I can’t help but wonder, what happened to accountability?
I know, it’s a strange term in today’s vindictive social climate. No one wants to be held accountable for their actions, unless they’re considered good, unless you don’t like them, but if more people do, that’s alright, I guess, just vote for me, OK?
One of my favorite people in this situation is Mitt Romney, Mr. “I stand by what I said, whatever it was.” This man has history of being all over the map. He is against gay marriage, but Massachusetts was the first state to legalize it. He pledges to repeal Obamacare, but Romneycare in Massachusetts, what Obamacare is based on, is something Romney is very proud of.
He is talking and talking but not really sending out a clear message. What is it he wants to do? Maybe he’s just a little confused, and I don’t blame him. It’s hard to get anyone to be honest with the American people lately.
Let’s take a look at the other side for a second here, Operation Fast and Furious. This, I’ll just say it, completely idiotic idea struggling to be swept under the rug is a great example of the lack of accountability in our Government. At least someone took the fall for Iran-Contra, but I don’t think Ollie is available for this one.
So, we have someone not wanting to be held accountable for his actions against his words, and a president who is trying to hide a terrible atrocity from the people of this country. We should be outraged at these things, but there have been so many more things that deserve our ire.
The financial collapse, no one has been held accountable for that. No one is being punished. In fact, some were even rewarded with large amounts of money. We live in a country where doing bad, on a large scale, isn’t punished. We should demand at the very least an honest explanation. We shouldn’t just accept silence.
Admitting and accepting your mistakes is part of being a great leader, it inspires people to be better, because they learn from your mistakes. You may destroy your reputation for a while, but honesty will show your true character to the world, not cowardice in the face of punishment, but standing tall and admitting your misdeeds.
Accountability is somthing that has been missing from America for too long. I say we bring it back, with a vengence.
