Making Headlines

August 24, 2008 defaultuser 0

In perhaps the best Olympic performance since Michael Phelps swam to eight gold medals the week before, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt bolted his way to history in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, setting new world records in each event. After dominating the 100-meter race earlier in the week with a world-record time of 9.69 seconds his encore was even more impressive. Absolutely burning up the track, Bolt beat former 200-meter world-record holder Michael Johnson’s record by turning in a time of 19.30. He is the first man since Carl Lewis of the United States to sweep the two events.

A few weeks into the second half of the season, the Orem Owlz have let everyone else know who is the boss in the Pioneer League. After falling behind in the standings early, the Owlz have ripped off 14 consecutive wins to regain first place. The winning streak is a franchise best and has the Owlz rolling as the playoffs near. After winning the Pioneer League championship in three of the last four years, Orem is the team to beat when September rolls around.

HEALTH INSURANCE CONCERNS — According to a survey released by Reuters on Thursday, more than eighty percent of Americans think the U.S. health system needs either fundamental change or a complete overhaul. The Harris Interactive poll found that access to care, better coordination between different health providers and better flow of health information were among respondents’ chief complaints. Another poll found that health insurance costs have doubled for Americans since 1996.

Letter to the editor

Certainly, Obama’s hyperconservative detractors will have their cataclysmic prophecies frustrated should his campaign render success in the upcoming election. But, no matter how much Ethan Dodge wishes it were the case, not all voters skeptical of Obama’s message view him as the herald of our nation’s demise. In reality, only a minority of people subscribe to this asinine perspective — and those who do seem to have more in common with the Obama faithful than they do with the more mainstream naysayer.
