Police blotter Sept. 2008

Sept. 15 – FELONY THEFT – A laptop valued at more than $1300 was stolen from the Student Government offices when it was left unattended by the owner. UVU police recovered the laptop from a local pawnshop where it had been pawned. A 21-year-old male student was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail.

This election season has been a season of firsts for the major parties. From Sen. Barack Obama’s meteoric rise as the first African-American nominee, to Sen. Hillary Clinton’s stalwart battle in the Democratic primaries, which brought her incredibly close to becoming the first woman on the presidential ticket.

Schott again repeats as Defensive Player of the Week For the third consecutive week, Utah Valley University goalkeeper Mallory Schott has been named the Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. The senior from Vancouver, Washington, continued to hold up the back line for Utah Valley despite a 0-2 week for the Wolverines at the Idaho State Classic.

Armstrong joins Astana In need of a team after announcing his return to the sport of cycling to race in the 2009 Tour de France, seven-time Tour winner Lance Armstrong announced that he will ride for team Astatna. The move was anticipated, as Armstrong’s long time team director Johan Bruyneel will be guiding him through the race after leading Lance in his seven wins.

Campus Briefs: UVU receives $200,000 to promote democracy – UVU’s Center for the Study of Ethics was recently granted nearly $200,000 from the Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE) to begin the three-year Utah Democracy Project. The purpose for this venture, according to the grant’s proposal, is to cultivate political literacy and encourage political engagement through a variety of educational programs.

Because two pedestrians were hit by a car on campus this past week, UVU Review has compiled a list of pedestrian and driver tips: Pay attention to your surroundings. Hold hands while crossing the street. Look both ways before crossing a road. Do not jaywalk: use sidewalks and crosswalks.
