Jefferson S. Burton, a former UVSC ROTC instructor, was recently promoted to brigadier general in a ceremony on Jan 10.
Burton is now one of only five generals in the Utah National Guard, replacing the retired Brig. Gen. Bruce Frandsen.
This promotion is rare and prestigious in the National Guard since a new general is only promoted when another steps down.
Burton worked with UVSC and BYU students as the assistant professor of military science in 2000 and 2001.
"I miss the environment very much so," said Burton about his experience at UVSC. "The energy of the students just starting out in life, and love to learn made every day a new experience."
"I loved everyone on campus, as an instructor I enjoyed working with all the students, and helping them in their transition from civilian life to Army life," said Burton. "The folks on campus were great, and working with the business department was such a great experience."
A resident of Payson, Burton has grown up in the area, and has sent his children to UVSC. About UVSC, and its transition to a university, he said, "I have said from the very beginning, UVSC is one of Utah’s best kept secrets when it comes to educational facilities, and it is about time this institution is recognized. It is long overdue."
Burton enlisted in the National Guard over 25 years ago as an artilleryman. He graduated from Brigham Young University’s ROTC program and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1984.
In 2003, Burton led 450 soldiers on their deployment to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. His latest former position included being responsible for the training and support of 5,200 soldiers.
