Critique of the week

Ali Mitton/UVU Review

Ali Mitton/UVU Review

This week my travels took me to a Vietnamese restaurant called Pho Plus Noodle House located on 908 S State St in Orem. I took a fine young lady with me, which always makes the experience even better – especially with the opportunity I was given to demonstrate my best attempt at slurping noodles and broth without drowning myself. That really impresses a girl.

For those of you who enjoy Vietnamese food, you likely know what pho (pronounced “fuh”) is. You likely also know that before now, the only place to get pho was SLC. Now Orem boasts a new pho restaurant, which opened about a month ago.

For those unfamiliar with the dish, it is a very popular Vietnamese soup of beef and noodles with fresh basil, sprouts, jalapeños and a lime presented on a side plate to allow the diners to add these items at their own discretion throughout the meal. If the ingredients are dumped in all at once, the sprouts and basil leaves wilt.

A cursory scan of the menu showed that though the restaurant it is primarily dedicated to pho, it does also offer other authentic asian foods such as real barbecue pork and yakisoba. We’re talking real asian food here, not Panda Express or some chinese buffet.

We ordered an appetizer of edamame which proved to be delicious, and, like the rest of the food there, highly nutritious.

Then came time for the main course. As a first-timer, I decided to take the path of adventure and ordered pho with flank, tendon, and tripe (intestine lining).

About ten minutes later, out came my massive bowl of Pho, which was only the “regular size” on the menu. I wondered if the chef had accidentally sent the whole pot out to me.

The quality of the food was superb. And while tripe and tendon aren’t quite my thing, they didn’t ruin the meal at all. Next time I think I’ll try the steak, flank, and brisket – and there will be a next time. As for the side vegetables, I figured that the restaurant had a garden in its kitchen.

The environment was comfortable and relaxed – not the kind of place to catch a football game on the bigscreen while you eat. However, this restaurant provides a wonderful retreat for fresh, delicious, and nutritious food. Sports and trans-fats are so Applebee’s anyway – give Pho Plus Noodle House a try.

Leviticus 2:1

And when any will offer a meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon:

These Things I Believe

The enemy among us, the vegans, have been steadily gaining converts in these latter days. Their lifestyle choice has been forced on us in the media, in the schools, and even in our own restaurants. Those of us with the courage to stand fast in our omnivorous beliefs against the torrent of a wicked, tofu-ridden society are mocked and ridiculed.

Brethren, I say “No More”! We must rise against this fishless tide if our covenant with the rama of chuck is to endure. We have promised to abide by certain articles of feast, and we will not stray.  Our principles are ordained thus:

–God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Leaf.

–We believe that men will be famished for their own chins, and not for Adam’s digestion.

–Adam fell that men might bean, and men are that they not have soy.

Meat, wrapped around by fur and nervous systems we identify as animals, is and always has been the target of man’s dominion.  Always remember, the true omnivore’s dilemma is whether to first feast on the tastiest cute animals, or the cutest tasty animals.

I say these things in the name of cheese and rice, amen.

Blood lust

A carnivorous diet is a life choice that I made for about two months of my life until I started craving the blood of my girlfriend at the time. When I was close to her jugular, I could feel the blood pumping over and over. That’s when I knew it was time to stop, but this does not dismiss the idea of an only meat or raw meat diet.

Through evolution we have developed teeth that are meant for tearing and chewing through meat. Now, why would humans have incisor teeth if not to tear through tough meat? Some scientists believe that not only was there a time when we were eating raw meat that developed our teeth, but consuming these super proteins along with bone marrow, made it possible for humans to develop the brains that we currently have today.

So, equipped with the muscle needed to enable choice of diet, what else?

Many that begin this diet have problems because of the supplement load that one must take to get a healthy diet. Also one might get what I believe is blood lust this is a state where one craves blood to the point he would kill to get it (similar to a vampire). This I would have to say is true while driving to school I would see innocent horses out in the field and I wanted to go ape on them, jump the fence and take a huge chunk off their neck to kill the beast and to start devouring it. I didn’t do this cause I’m sure there are laws about eating someone’s horse.  Instead I went to a butcher and collected some red raw meat to eat. That sure did hit the spot.

Raw animal products contain important enzymes. Yes you can get these enzymes from disgusting vegetables and fruit, well forget that ‘cause there are so many more enzymes inside raw animal foods.

Your probably saying, “this guy is a langer, this does not sound safe at all with all the possible E. coli or parasites that may be in your food.” Your option according to nourishing traditions is to “freeze the meat for 14 days prior to use,” but scientists agree that if you kill an animal before it has time to get bad bacteria, you can eat it and it is healthy for you, woot woot.

Raw meat is also high source of vitamin B. An excerpt from the Professional guide to diseases says that, “many functions of your body are supported by vitamin B.”  Deficiencies of b6 which is high in raw meats have been linked to diabetes, heart disease, carpel tunnel syndrome, PMS, toxemia of pregnancy, kidney failure, alcoholism, asthma, sickle cell anemia and cancer… as you can see you should be including more raw meats into your diet, and don’t worry, no one will miss the neighbors horse, dog or cat, just clean up after yourself.
