The Redhawks took advantage of the Wolverines’ lack of perimeter shooting early on as they took a 10-1 lead in the first four minutes of play. Back-to-back fast break scores by SU put them up by 17 points with 11 minutes left — UVU wouldn’t get within 17 points the rest of the game.
Utah Valley men’s soccer saw their 2019 season extended by at least one more match on Friday, Nov. 15, against Air Force Academy because of penalty kicks. But had their season come to a close on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 17, against Seattle University due to penalty kicks. The Redhawks then earned the WAC title and an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
The Utah Valley Wolverines snapped their three-game losing streak on Thursday night, Nov. 14, when they visited the Redhawks of Seattle University behind a strong offensive outing by sophomore outside hitter Kazna Tarawhiti and her 25 kills.
An 87th minute goal and a 99th minute golden goal by Seattle University ended Utah Valley’s 2019 season and a chance at an NCAA tournament berth. The game took place on Sunday, Nov. 10, at Championship Field in Seattle. UVU hung on to a 1-0 lead for almost 56 minutes before SU tied it late, and eventually sealed it in overtime by a score of 2-1.
“I’m at a loss for words and gutted for our team — two lapses in discipline were the difference in today’s match,” UVU head coach Greg Maas said to reporters. “I couldn’t ask for a better start; up a goal, and even down a man, I didn’t think we’d relinquish our lead. Unfortunately, we can’t put the referee in a position to make a call in that moment. We’ll put this behind us, learn from it, and get ready for a welcomed return to Clyde Field.”
