UVUSA adopts Geneva Road

A day of service and free breakfast began early last Saturday morning for the participants in UVUSA’s first Adopt-a-Highway service project.

This year, UVUSA adopted a two-mile stretch of Geneva Road extending from mile marker four to mile marker six, which is located near Parkway Crossing Apartments in Orem.

“We signed a contract with Adopt-a-Highway,” said Service Council President Richard Portwood. “It’s a two-year contract, and we are required to clean it at least three times a year.”

Portwood said that project was a joint effort between UVUSA and the service council and was organized to give back to the community that has done so much for them.

“Volunteers were organized into four teams, and each was assigned a section of the road to tackle,” said Service Director Susie Harris. “We came up with games to play to make the project more fun and gave out awards to the winners of each game.”

Among the awards given was one for finding the most “trashy” item along each stretch of the highway. In addition to playing games and receiving awards, the volunteers ate a free breakfast before the project started.

Harris said the next Adopt-a-Highway project will probably happen near the beginning of next semester and all students, community members and youth leaders are welcome to help.
