The Orem Owlz came out with a rough start in their seven-game series at home.
The Owlz, who have proved to be quite a first- and second-inning team kicked off the game against Great Falls 2-0 within the first few innings but, let down and never saw the lead again after the fourth. Orem fell 7-3.
However, that wasn’t a downer for the Owlz, since they answered back in the second game with a 2-1 victory over Great Falls. The defense took an obvious step forward, and some impressive stats from the team helped solidify the victory.
Robert Lopez pounded an RBI single in the first inning of the game, putting him on a 21-game hitting streak.
“I am trying to stay consistent day in and day out,” Lopez said. “I am not trying to do too much.”
And consistent he has been. With that win it gives the Owlz their 16th win of the season.
It came down to pitcher Reyes Dorado, who saved the game by allowing only one hit in the 9th.
Among the nail biters lately is the rally against the Idaho Falls Chukers last week. The all too familiar pattern of taking the quick lead must have caught up to them. Orem led the game 4-0 in the first inning. In fact, it wasn’t until after the 8-1 lead in the seventh inning was over that things got interesting. An RBI triple by the Chukers followed by a three-run home run put the Chukers within one in a matter of minutes. However, the Owlz ended the scare 9-8, again with superb pitching.
The Owlz will start their seven-game series away from Brent Brown Ball Park beginning July 16 against Great Falls, and they will finish with the Billings Mustangs.
