As the snow begins to fall this winter, students get excited and gear up for the upcoming ski and snowboard season. The Outdoor Adventure Center in the Student Center is here to help.

The OAC sells season passes at a discounted price for the 2010-11 winter season. By simply being a student at UVU, students can save cash when looking to buy a ski pass.

“We give the college deal if you buy a pass from here,” said Jakapo Nelson, an employee at the OAC. “It‘s a really great deal compared to if you buy it from the resort.”

The shop offers season passes for Sundance, Snowbird and The Canyons, each with a discounted price, varying by resort. Not only do they sell season passes, but they also rent equipment such as snowboards, cross-country skis, snowshoes and backcountry gear for wintertime adventures.

Not too big into skiing? There are plenty of reasons why this year should be the year to hit the slopes.

“You can learn different skills from skiing,” said Ramsay Beecher, an employee at the OAC. “It builds confidence and can create an improved lifestyle.”

Dallin Schwendiman, a student at UVU and passionate snow skier since the age of 3, cannot wait for this season to start. One main reason he said he loves to ski is because not only is it a huge thrill, but it can also save a trip to the gym. Going down the steep, rugged Utah mountains can be a great way to fit in a daily workout.

“You don’t want to go to the gym, so you get on a pair of sticks [skis] and ride,” Schwendiman said.

The good thing about snow skiing and snowboarding is that anyone can give it a try. Trails are marked easy, medium, diamond and double black diamond, which are for experts.

“People come from all over the world to ski Utah, and we are lucky to live here,” Nelson said.

Take advantage of what wintertime has to offer by purchasing a season pass right here on campus. For more information on exact pricing for season passes and other equipment, visit the OAC located on the first floor of the Sorenson Student Center.
